ABOUT THE MASTERCLASS

Led by acclaimed photographer Yoriyas Yassine Alaoui Ismaili—a Tasweer 2025 main exhibition artist— and in collaboration with The Doha Players, this engaging masterclass explores the power of storytelling through documentary photography. Designed for photographers and visual storytellers, this 2-day masterclass offers guidance on developing meaningful projects, honing your personal perspective, and building compelling visual narratives.

By exploring key elements like layers, movement, rhythm, space, angles, and timing, participants will learn to trust their instincts and turn everyday scenes into powerful visual narratives.

About Yoriyas Yassine Alaoui Ismaili

Yassine Alaoui Ismaili, known as Yoriyas, is a Moroccan photographer and choreographer who began his artistic journey as a professional breakdancer before turning to photography in 2014. His work explores how people inhabit and transform urban spaces, particularly in Casablanca and other global cities. Drawing on his background in choreography, Yoriyas brings a distinct sense of movement, rhythm, and spatial awareness to his photography. His spontaneous scenes reflect a deep mastery of space and timing, with intuitive compositions and bold use of color.

Yoriyas has exhibited internationally at institutions including Qatar Museums (Doha), Fondation d’entreprise Hermès (Paris), Tropenmuseum (Amsterdam), Kyotographie (Japan), and the Institut du Monde Arabe (Paris). His work is held in prestigious collections such as the Royal Collection of Morocco, the Hermès Foundation and Barjeel Art Foundation (Sharjah) .

He has received major awards including the International Prize for Contemporary Photography (2018) and the Friends of the IMA Prize (2019). His photography has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, National Geographic, Vogue, and more. In 2022, he curated Sourtna, the inaugural exhibition of Morocco’s National Photography Museum and also exhibited at the World Bank in Washington.

Participant Requirements:

  • DSLR or mirrorless camera (with charged batteries and memory cards)
  • 10–15 images from your portfolio (digital or printed)
  • Laptop with basic photo editing software (e.g. Lightroom, Photoshop)
  • Cables or card readers for image transfer
  • (optional)  Notes or concept outline for any current/personal photography project
