Are the Sheikh Saud Al Thani Awards and the Tasweer Awards the same Award Program?
Yes. However, starting from 2024, please apply for the annual Tasweer Project and Single Image Awards.
Who can enter the Tasweer Awards - Project Award open call?
Any photographer who is currently resident in the Western Asia and North Africa (WANA) region can apply.
What are the crucial dates in the open call process?
- Open call and submissions open 13th March and ends 05th of May 2024
- Jury deliberations on 19th May 2024
- Awardees will be contacted on 26 May 2024
- The awardees will be publicly announced on 01 July 2024
*Process doesn’t include public holidays (Eid, etc)
What types of image file formats will the open call accept?
Tasweer accepts your image file in jpeg, tiff and png format.
What is the maximum image size?
Your image size should be no larger than 2,000 pixels.
What format does each of the filenames need to take?
This is a crucial step to get right when you are submitting to the Tasweer Project Award open call. File names are a mandatory field in the submission process. We need you to follow these guidelines, otherwise we cannot guarantee that your images/open call reaches the jurors in full. Each image filename to be formatted with your First and Last Name _Project Title_Image Number.
Sample:
- Ali Hamed_The Genesis_1.
The numbers at the end of the file names should be consecutive
- Ali Hamed_The Genesis_1, Ali Hamed_The Genesis_2, Ali Hamed_The Genesis_3
- Ali Hamed_The Genesis_4.
Are images made with my camera phone valid for entry to the open call?
Yes.
Is it okay to use Photoshop?
Yes, you can use Photoshop. You can also manipulate images, just make sure that you define your concept/reasons for extensive manipulation in your accompanying artist’s statement.
We work as a duo/collective/family – can we jointly submit an image to the open call?
Yes. As long as you have/receive the consent from your partner or collaborator.
How will I know if my open call submission has been received?
We will send a confirmation email. If we see any problems or omissions from your submission, we will contact you within one week. To avoid any last-minute problems or surprise glitches, we highly recommend that you submit your application before the deadline date of 05 May 2024.
How will I know if my open call submission image has been selected?
You will receive an official email from Tasweer.
Can I submit a photographic project that has already won an award, or has been entered in a previous competition?
Yes.
My work is not realized in conventional framed print form. Can I still submit my work to the Tasweer Project Award open call?
Yes. If the final form of your work is unframed, printed onto fabric, vinyl, and other non-conventional materials, and/or has sculptural elements, you are welcome to apply. We also accept video as a component to the project. However, video cannot be the entirety of the project. Our only stipulation when using other mediums in the project is that photographic practices and imagery are central to the concept and experience of the project and your grant proposal.
Can I withdraw or change my submission once I’ve entered it?
No, but you can make a new submission with your changes. Please email us at Awards@Tasweer.qa and let us know if you are making a new submission.
Will Tasweer archive my submission, even if I am not shortlisted by the award jury?
All submissions may be stored, archived and digitally preserved. If you do not wish for your submissions to be stored, please contact us at Awards@Tasweer.qa
How are the Tasweer Project Awardees selected?
Your submission will be reviewed by all members of the jury before they convene and make their collective decision who will be awarded the Tasweer Project Award in 2024. Awardees will be contacted in May 2024, and photographers who are not selected for the 2024 grant awards will be notified in June 2024.
If my project is selected, what is the copyright/image license relationship with Tasweer that I am agreeing to?
Please see our Terms & Conditions for the full agreement. In summary, if you are selected for a 2024 grant award, we ask that you agree to Tasweer and its partners to disseminate your open call submission images – fully credited to you – for non-commercial promotion of the Tasweer Awards and Tasweer for digital use. Tasweer will inform you and work with you with regards to any printed reproduction.
If my project is not selected, what is the copyright/image license relationship with Tasweer that I am agreeing to?
You will always retain full copyright even if you are selected. By submitting your photograph, you grant Tasweer the license to use your image online. If at any time, you would like Tasweer to no longer be able to use your image, please contact the Tasweer team at Awards@ Tasweer.qa
I have already started my new photographic project that I intend to develop with the support of the Tasweer Project Award grant, do I need to include any image files of this work-in-progress in my submission?
It is not essential to include work-in-progress image files within the initial submission to the Tasweer Project Award. The juror’s selection process is balanced between the existing project that you submit and your written proposal for how you will use the Project Award grant.
How does Tasweer expect to receive the selected works for exhibition at Tasweer 2025?
Tasweer’s curators will work with you to make a selection of works for possible exhibition at the third Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar biennial progamme in February 2025.
What expectations are there of me in relation to the project that I develop or create using the monetary grant award?
Our hope is that you keep us informed about the progress of your supported photographic project, and allow us to update Tasweer’s online visitors with your progress. We would also like to have the option of approaching you if there are opportunities to exhibit your new work as part of Tasweer 2025. If you are awarded a Project Award, we will create an agreement that will include a detailed schedule of both Tasweer’s and your expectations.
