Rita Kabalan, 'Defiant', presented at Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar 2025.
Bringing together winners from 2023 and 2024, "Threads of Light" celebrates 32 photographers whose singular images illuminate the intricate tapestry of life across the Western Asia and North Africa. Each photograph stands as a moment of convergence where technical mastery meets profound storytelling, where individual vision opens onto collective experience.
These images span intimate family portraits in Cairo apartments to folkloric ceremonies in Saudi Arabia, from Palestinian refugee camps to Qatari deserts. Working across diverse approaches – some with professional cameras, others with mobile phones – these photographers transform fleeting moments into enduring testimonies of cultural continuity and change. They find extraordinary beauty in ordinary places: a bread exchange between neighbors in old Sana'a, children playing in Iraqi landfills, craftsmen preserving traditional skills in Egyptian workshops.
What emerges is a rich visual dialogue between tradition and transformation, between rooted identity and continuous adaptation. Whether documenting architectural heritage, capturing unguarded moments of joy, or creating conceptual works that challenge conventional narratives, each photographer contributes to a larger conversation about belonging and becoming in a region of profound change. Together, these 32 images reveal how a single frame can capture both the specificity of place and the universality of human experience, demonstrating photography's enduring power to preserve moments while speaking to eternal themes.
