Tasweer Awards

The Tasweer Project Award is a grant award of 30,000 QAR per awardee to support the initiation, further development or completion of a photographic project by a photographer resident in Western Asia and North Africa. Awardees will also have the opportunity to exhibit their work and participate in the public and online programme of events as part of the Tasweer Photo Festival Qatar.

The Tasweer Single Image Award is an annual award open to photographers that are 18+ with different degrees of experience, resident in Western Asia and North Africa, to submit a single photographic image that best represents their experience and personal narrative. Awardees will have the opportunity to have their single images presented in an online exhibition, receive a cash prize, and participate in Tasweer photo festival Qatar’s online and public programme.

Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Single Image Award 2023

For the 3rd Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Single Image Awards, Tasweer invited the independent curator Rola Khayyat to select the 2023 awardees. Tasweer congratulates Mohamed Hoyzen Ahmed, Hussein AlAamri, Yousef Almasoud, Salaheddine El Bouaaichi, Samir Mustafa Abdel Fattah Hussein, Rita Kabalan, Mohamed Kaouche, Akram Menari, Ahmed Muhammed, Mohamed Nageeb Nasr, Michael Anthony Perrone, and Salem Sultan.

Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Project Award 2022

For the second year of jurying this annual grant award in 2022,  the jury was Sueraya Shaheen (photographer and editor); and Kristine Khouri (independent researcher) and Sheikha Shaikha Al-Thani (Qatar Photographic Society), along with Tasweer’s Artistic Director Charlotte Cotton, Director Khalifa Ahmad Al Obaidly and Senior Curator Maryam Hassan Al-Thani. They reviewed applicants’ proposals and held meetings in January 2022 before selecting the awardees. 2022 award winners include: Reem Falaknaz, Salih Basheer, Abdo Shanan, Fethi Sahraoui and Fatema Bint Ahmad

Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Single Image Award 2022

In 2022, for the second year of the Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Single Image Awards, Tasweer invited founder of the Habibi Collective, Roisin Tapponi, to select twelve awardees.  The Habibi Collective supports SWANA video and film practices made by women.  Tapponi also instigated an independent streaming platform for SWANA cinema in 2018 called Shasha Movies. Winners include: Raghda Khairy, Adriane de Souza, Murtadha Adnan AlHassan, Hallouli Mohamed Ameur, Hani Hamdan Alsuleimani, Muhammed Mostafa, Ryan Brand, Dima Assad, Salman Faris, Aya Muhammed and Khalid Alrawahi.

In October 2020, Tasweer announced the open call for applications to this annual grant award and formed a jury with Sheikha Sara Al-Thani (Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Awards); Sueraya Shaheen (photographer and editor); and Kristine Khouri (independent researcher) and Sheikha Shaikha Al-Thani (Qatar Photographic Society), along with Tasweer’s Artistic Director Charlotte Cotton, Director Khalifa Ahmad Al Obaidly and Senior Curator Maryam Hassan Al-Thani. They reviewed applicants’ proposals and held meetings in January 2021 before selecting six awardees – Hayat Ahmed Al Sharif, Mohammed El Shamy, Mona Hassan, Rula Halawani, Samar Sayer Baiomy, Shaima Al-Tamimi.

Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Single Image Award 2021

The Sheikh Saoud Al Thani Award was first announced in 2001 as a platform to support photographers. The award was relaunched by Tasweer in its inaugural year of 2021, with the Saoud bin Mohammed Al-Thani Foundation, as annual open call to photographers in Western Asia and North Africa (WANA), continuing its journey of celebrating and nurturing photographic talent. In October 2020, Tasweer announced the open call for applications to this single image award application and announced the awards jury and curators – the Photo Art Qatar collective; Adriane de Souza, Ammar Alqamash, Latifah Aldarwish, and Shaima Ayoub.
